A Farewell to Biking

I don't miss biking.  At all.

It's so nice riding in a car up and down the hills we used to bike on while saying, "Hey.  We're not going to be stinky and sweaty when we get to work."  And it's so nice to actually be able to look nice for work.  No more worrying about helmet hair or shiny make up.

While we're very willingly and happily saying "goodbye" to biking as a necessity, we did have some fun times in the last month while it was our only form of transportation.

Our first week in Juneau, after work one day, we rode up to a trail that runs along Mount Juneau.  It's a very easy trail with wooden planks along the way, and it's smooth enough that we were able to ride our bikes on it.

See that mountain in the background?
That's Mount Juneau.

During the winter, an avalanche pushed rocks over the path.

Last Wednesday, we happened to have a day off.  We didn't have the car yet, so our only options of leaving the house were either by foot or by bike.  Eric knew of a trail close to us on Douglas Island, so we headed that way.

The Treadwell Mine was one of the major mines on Douglas Island.  At the height of its days, it collapsed from a freak flooding.  All that remains now are...well, remains.  The city put in a nice trail that runs along the mine with signs that point out its major points and its history.

Erhmergersh! Er werv mirns.

Ruins of the mine.

This guy.

This guy riding his bike side-saddle.  Just because.

Lastly, on the route we would take to and from work is a creek on Douglas called Lawson Creek.  It's something you don't notice while flying by in a car.

I would often stop to look at it or take a picture of it as an excuse to take a break from biking.

Just throwing this one in.  Biking allowed us to
enjoy the little things of Juneau...like this sign.
