Feliz Dia das Bruxas

Happy (very, very late) Halloween!

Or as it is in Portuguese, "Dia das Bruxas," day of the witches.

This Halloween, Eric and I were, indeed, flying magical creatures...but not the right kind.

Can you guess who we are?

At the embassy was a Halloween party for the children of the diplomats and other state department employees.  Since we were volunteering for the party, we decided to dress up.  We wanted to do a couples costume like we did last year, so after hours and hours of searching on Pinterest, we found the idea to dress up as Cosmo and Wanda from Fairly Odd Parents.

Last year's Halloween costumes.

It was fun watching the kids try to figure out who we were.  The other 20-somethings at the embassy guessed right away.

During the party, we came across the ambassador...who we didn't recognize at first.

Heading home after the party was interesting.  Though we were able to ditch our wings and crowns, we couldn't get rid of the hair dye so easily.  We got some fun looks on the metro.

It's funny how in one day Eric can go from a dignified diplomatic intern...

...to this.

Cosmo, you bumbling idiot!

When I was growing up, my family wasn't big into dressing up or trick-or-treating, but we were big into making sweet treats together.  This year, I wanted to keep that tradition.  I also happen to have a lot of time on my hand.

My first treat inspiration came from Betty Crocker:  Spooky Boo Brownies.  I didn't have all the ingredients on hand, so I had to make do with substitutions.

I fail at cutting brownies, but they were delicious nonetheless.

I didn't have a brownie mix on hand, so I used this super yummy and super easy recipe I came across:  Fudge Brownies from Scratch.

They fill our apartment with a heavenly,
chocolatey smell.

Luckily, I had marshmallows, but I didn't have chocolate chips.  I had to make do with nutella for the faces.  Darn.

For the frosting that went on top of the brownies, I used a simple cream cheese frosting recipe I randomly came across online.

My other treat is Eric's and my favorite treat to make together:  Oreo Krispies.  I used the extra frosting from the brownies to Halloweenify this treat.
